Hey Centurions!
Deep into the 2023 Season, UCHS finally hosts its first home game.
I'm not sure we have a main league rival, but Coronado is a definite candidate.
The anticipation was high as we expected another back and forth battle.
The team was ready as were the parents who had been prepping some crowd giveways and other sideline entertainment.
The crowd was ready and fired up and according to Sean Spicer, the largest high school boys VB crowd in the history of crowds.
JV delivered the drama.
Taking the first set, but losing the second, our JV Team fell behind big in the first-to-15 tiebreaker.
Calling a time-oub,Coach Choi did that leadership thing in the huddel and the team came out on fire to charge back to get it close at the end... Details later.
Clairemont looked big and intimidating in warmups, but UC Varsity was playing well.
Learning that too big a lead deflates a crowding, and wanting to keep the crowd engaged, the team shrewdly served into the net a whole bunch and out a few times, too. And that one that bounced on the floor under the net (wait, that one was at Bonita Vista last week).
The team did a good job of not getting too far ahead to lose the crowd, but taking control at the end of the first two sets to take a 2-0 lead.
Would we get that five set nail-biter?
We tried, falling well behind in the third set.
The boys must have heard that the pizza was geting cold because they pulled one of those hot streaks that wrapped it all up in a hurry (like the Championship run at the Sweetwater tourney).

We swept Coronado last year, but both matches went the full five sets.
We in the bleachers thought Match 1 (220325 UC vs Coronado) was exciting, but it was nothing compared to the glorious 5-set nail-biter that went twelve points extra in the deciding set 21-19! Click here for that page: 220420 - A Wild Win at Coronado!
