May 10th
Playoffs ended on May 7th with only the two teams we lost to (Cathedral Catholic and Torrey Pines) above us in the SD CIF rankings.  With a 3rd place outcome out of 37 teams in total - congratulations to ALL team members from the Club/Futures to JV to Varsity to Playoff squads!  With weekly practices, pool play, and matches, we saw progess made by all players.  We will miss the seniors and wish them well in wherever they go after graduation.  And we look forward to working with everyone else next year!  Those of you wanting to participate in summer and off-season clinics and workouts should contact Coach Mark.

May 3rd - Playoffs vs Helix

220503 - Playoffs vs Helix

Congratulations to our UCHS Playoff squad for defeating Helix 4-1 on our home courts one last time.

April 16th
Regular season completed and we ended up in second place in our league after a spectacular battle with La Jolla this past Thursday. With a record of 6-1, we are surely in the playoffs. This is what we have received from the league manager - "Playoffs will consist of 2 divisions based on school size, not on power rankings. Division 1: 1501 students and above, Division 2: 1500 and below. The CIF Reps will meet on Monday, April 25th to discuss records and finalize seedings. There are 37 schools participating but only 24 will make it to playoffs. (12 teams in each division). You will know on Monday night, April 25th, whether your team is in or not. Playoff dates: Thursday, April 28th, Tuesday, May 3rd, Thursday May 5th, (all at the home of higher seeded schools). Finals, at Mesa College will be at 1pm and 4pm on May 7th. There won’t be a charge to attend any of these events and official referees will only be provided for the CIF finals."

March 26th
Roughly halfway through and we are now 4-0!  We definitely can improve our play a bit more, but you've shown that you can make adjustments during your matches and persevere through being behind by several points and even down 0-1 in sets to come back and earn the W.  We will have three matches that will seem back-to-back once we return from Spring Break.  Matches on April 7th (Thursday), 11th (Monday), and 14th (Thursday) will seem like a whirlwind to end the season. Let's be sure to keep the season moving forward with each point, each set, and each match.  Go watch the videos at NEXT LEVEL to study defensive play.  This is what we'll need for the last three matches.  Have a great Spring Break!

March 10th
Just over 2 weeks into the season and we are 2-0.  Well done ladies!  Now is the time to start learning a bit more about the game and then apply what you learn in practice.  Go visit Coach Mark's Sandbox here in order to watch some tutorial videos about the four complex skills of beach volleyball: serving, passing, setting, and hitting.  I'll be adding the Next Level category soon, but first go through the four complex skills and take notes.  Be a student of the game in all aspects and you'll surely improve.

Feb 20th

Congratulations to everyone for completing the two days of tryouts (Monday and Wednesday with Tuesday cancelled due to weather)!  The three squads of our team: Varsity, Junior Varisty, Club/Futures, were tough to select for because of the great talent shown by everyone.  These selections were announced in the email sent out on Thursday (Feb 17th) and make sure that you consider the first two weeks of practice as tryouts as well, because we may shift a handful of people around based on performance.  The Club/Futures squad is the future of our team, so don't take this squad lightly.  Each squad has approximately 8 teams and we will do our best to provide everyone either competition between us and other schools, one or two UCHS tournaments, and plenty of time to compete and get better in practice.  Each of you will be given a beach volleyball, uniform, and we will expect you to attend all home matches to cheer on our top 8 competition teams.  When other schools have more teams to play against us, we will do our best to bring in more UCHS teams to play after the official league match is done.

***Be sure to complete Athlectic Clearance ---> Follow HERE.  If Girls Beach Volleyball is not available as an option, then follow through with Girls Volleyball.***. This year we are transitioning from club to CIF, but are still considered a club sport for the season.

---> Go visit Coach Mark's Sandbox here in order to watch some tutorial videos about the four complex skills of beach volleyball: serving, passing, setting, and hitting.  It has passing and setting videos up now.  You'll get some key pointers from professional beach volleyball players to make your beach game better.

The current arrangement in the Sand Volleyball League is to have up to 8 top teams from each school compete against each other.  We have approximately 8 "Varsity" teams and 8 "JV" teams.  We will try to get as many of our teams competition on the days we have matches. The first league match is scheduled for March 3rd.  The last league match is April 28th.  Even though we are technically still a club team, the league is being run as a CIF sport in terms of comeptition and CIF playoffs are May 3rd-7th. A CIF divisional seeding meeting will be held after league competition to determine placement in the divisions for the Championships.

We will play each opposing team one time for a total of seven matches during the nearly 2 month regular season.  We are in the SDCC Western League.  Teams include:

      • University City
      • La Jolla
      • Coronado
      • Mission Bay
      • Cathedral Catholic
      • OLP
      • Scripps Ranch
      • Clairemont

Brief Match Schedule: Players need to arrive no later than 3:45pm* for matches. Players bring sunscreen, water, and a towel.  Parents are encouraged to bring chairs, sunscreen, and water for themselves, also.  All three squads (Varisty, JV, and Club) are encouraged to show up and support the teams competing.  We will need players to serve as referees, scorekeepers, and line judges.

*We need to arrive early to matches so that we have time to warmup as a whole team and can go over the rules/process with both teams together.

We are having a practice this Saturday, from 9am to noon at Coronado Central Beach. It will hopefully be a good chance to practice in windier conditions. Everyone is invited! It's going to be hotter, sunnier, and longer than our normal after school practices. So bring plenty of water, sunglasses, and wear sunscreen!
